Design Engineer (BAS)

MissionHires is seeking a Design Engineer (BAS) to develop and document complete building automation control solutions for commercial, industrial, and mission‑critical facilities. You will translate project requirements and HVAC Sequences of Operation into constructible BAS designs—control drawings, network architecture, device layouts, and engineered submittals—while coordinating with MEP engineers, contractors, and field teams to drive accurate installation, commissioning, and long‑term system performance.

• Analyze building and occupant requirements to define automation strategies
• Develop complete BAS designs: control schematics, riser and wiring diagrams, network architecture, and device/sensor layouts
• Size and select valves, actuators, sensors, and DDC components based on mechanical system needs
• Author, validate, and refine HVAC Sequences of Operation (SOO)
• Produce Bills of Materials (BOMs), point lists, I/O schedules, and installation notes
• Ensure designs comply with project specifications, energy codes, safety standards, and industry best practices
• Create complete BAS/ATC submittal packages per plans, addenda, and job specifications
• Maintain as‑built documentation; update drawings based on RFIs, field feedback, and design changes
• Document design decisions, wiring diagrams, and software configurations
• Collaborate with MEP engineers, contractors, equipment manufacturers, project managers, and field technicians
• Participate in design reviews, coordination meetings, and value‑engineering efforts
• Support construction, startup, commissioning, and integration with EPMS, DCIM, and other systems
• Apply and maintain company design standards, Visio standards, and naming conventions
• Recommend products and approaches that improve system performance and value
• Contribute to engineering standards libraries and best‑practice documentation
• Independently lead large design packages and manage work from development through implementation

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field experience
• 3–5+ years of BAS or HVAC controls design experience (minimum three years relevant Design Engineer experience)
• Proficiency with Microsoft Visio and BAS drafting/documentation tools; Microsoft Office proficiency
• Ability to interpret mechanical plans, specifications, and HVAC Sequences of Operation
• Strong technical, problem‑solving, organizational, and communication skills
• Experience with mechanical systems: RTUs, VAVs, AHUs, DOAS, hydronic systems, chiller plants, cooling towers, and boiler plants
• Familiarity with networking, IT coordination, and third‑party integrations
• Tridium Niagara experience or certification preferred
• Knowledge of building automation systems, HVAC systems, building construction, and contracting
• Ability to work independently and lead large design packages
• Ability to manage projects from development through implementation and evaluation
• Willingness to support field activities, construction, startup, and commissioning
• Physical ability to sit for prolonged periods working on a computer; lift up to 50 lbs; climb and work on ladders and elevated surfaces; work in non‑controlled environments and outdoors as required; adhere to PPE and safety procedures
