The Director of Clinical Education and Development provides strategic leadership and direction for clinical education and professional development initiatives across the organization. This role partners closely with Learning and Development to design, implement, evaluate, and continuously improve high-impact educational programs that enhance clinical documentation, coding accuracy, and overall healthcare delivery.
Educational Program Development & Delivery
Design and implement comprehensive clinical education and training programs, including physician onboarding.
Develop and maintain curricula for physicians, CDI specialists, coding analysts, and healthcare professionals.
Deliver internal and external training sessions, workshops, and webinars (virtual, in-person, blended formats).
Apply adult learning principles and innovative instructional design to ensure effective knowledge transfer.
Quality Assurance & Compliance
Conduct quality assurance reviews and performance assessments.
Monitor program effectiveness and implement continuous improvement initiatives.
Ensure documentation and coding education aligns with CMS guidelines, ICD-10 updates, DRG standards, and regulatory requirements.
Maintain HIPAA compliance and confidentiality of protected health information (PHI).
Leadership & Cross-Functional Collaboration
Chair educational committees and lead physician workflow roundtables.
Collaborate with compliance, HIM/coding, quality teams, service line leaders, and organizational leadership.
Align education initiatives with organizational priorities and clinical/financial performance goals.
Content Innovation & Continuous Improvement
Stay current on industry trends, regulatory updates, and best practices in CDI and coding compliance.
Introduce digital learning tools and modern education delivery methods.
Track and analyze performance metrics such as DRG accuracy, query rates, and documentation quality scores.
Implement targeted interventions to improve clinical documentation and financial outcomes.
Client Engagement & Strategic Support
Provide client-facing education on documentation accuracy and coding impact.
Participate in industry events and contribute to thought leadership.
Support expansion of consulting services and ongoing programs (e.g., DRG Assurance initiatives).
Advanced clinical degree (MD, DO, or equivalent) required.
Preferred certifications: CCS, CCDS, CRCR, CDIP, HCQM.
Minimum 5 years of clinical practice experience.
Demonstrated experience in clinical documentation improvement (CDI), coding compliance, and regulatory standards.
Experience developing and delivering educational programs.
Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
Deep knowledge of ICD-10-CM/PCS, DRGs, HCCs, CPT/E&M, and CMS guidelines.
Ability to interpret and apply regulatory standards.
Analytical mindset with experience tracking performance metrics.
Ability to collaborate cross-functionally and influence clinical stakeholders.
